Annual Sports & Leisure Award Scheme

Following the success of the 'Volunteer' and 'Coach' competitions for past 2-years and indeed the success of the recipients in the County Awards, we were delighted that the quality of this year's nominations lived up to that standard.  This year the nominations included coaches, officials and helpers who willingly donate many hours of their time to contribute to voluntary sports clubs across the district.  In a meeting lasting over 3-hours the selection panel were asked to consider the following 8-nominations for the Volunteer award and 5-nominations for the Coach award.

'The Holistic Clinic', our partner in this initiative, will donate prizes for the top 3-places in the 'Volunteer' and 'Coach' categories.  Based in Ludlow and established 8-years ago by local resident Emma Kenchington.  'The Holistic Clinic' offers the professional services of over 22-qualified and registered Complementary Health Practitioners, available for consultation, by appointment, throughout the week.  The philosophy of the clinic is to offer an integrated approach to health care.  To treat holistically is to treat all aspects of a condition as well as its symptoms.  There is quality of interaction between practitioner and patent that is emotionally satisfying to both, which engages people in their own health care.

Prizes for 'Volunteer' and 'Coach' category:

  • First prize - Cash award (Sports & Leisure Advisory Group affiliations) £50.00
     Holistic Clinic Treatments £65.00
Assistance with an automatic Entry to the 'Shropshire Awards'

     Holistic Clinic Treatments £25.00
Assistance with an automatic Entry to the 'Shropshire Awards'
  • Third prize - Cash award (Advisory Council Affiliations budget) £20.00
     Holistic Clinic Treatments £10.00
Assistance with an automatic Entry to the 'Shropshire Awards'

David Hinves (SSDC Leisure Development Manager) says, 'The unsung hero's and heroines' are vital to the life blood of community sports and leisure clubs in South Shropshire and it is vital that their contribution is valued.  Once again the quality of nominations was extremely high and so I am delighted to be able to recognise and celebrate the commitment and achievements of these people with these awards.'

John Thorpe, Chair of South Shropshire Sports & Leisure Advisory Group says, 'It is a shame we cannot reward everybody who gives up so much of their time and energy to devote to community sport.  Without them community voluntary sports clubs would not survive.'

The Team of the Year award has been presented three times before, twice to Church Stretton School Girl's Football Team in 2004 and 2007 (on winning the National Knockout Cup at Under 13 and Under 16 level) and to Cleobury Mortimer RFC in 2006 (on reaching the Twickenham Final of the PowerGen Junior Vase).

This trophy is ONLY presented in special circumstances to a particularly worthy cause.  In the absence of an 'outstanding' achievement performed by a South Shropshire 'team' on the national stage during the past year, it was decided that we could not award the 'Team of the Year' trophy.
