Domestic Food Waste Collections
How it works
Each property in the collection area is issued with a 25 Litre blue kerbside bin, a grey food caddy and a roll of compostable caddy liners.
Place the liner in the grey caddy, fill with food waste and then tie the liner using the handles and place in the blue kerbside bin.
To help stop pests ensure that you securely close your bin.
Food waste is collected weekly and taken to the South Shropshire Biodigester to produce biofertilizer and generate heat and renewable electricity.
As the food brakes down the temperature is carefully controlled to ensure that the finished product is completely sterile. The biofertilizer is used for agriculture, horticulture and for site restoration.
What can I put in my caddy?
All food waste is acceptable for collection including:
- fruit and vegetables
- freezer contents
- uncooked meat and fish
- bones & carcasses
- cooked meat and fish
- bread, cakes & pastries
- solid fats
- dairy products
- rice, pasta & beans
- tea & coffee grounds
Please don't put any of these materials in your caddy
Packaging of any sort including:
- plastic bags
- liquids
- oil or liquid fat.
Tips for recycling your food waste
Your bin must be out for collection by 7am on your collection day and must be clearly seen.
It is recommended to put your house name or number on your outside food waste bin so we know where to return it.
Keep your food waste caddy and bin clean by tying your corn starch liners when they are full.
When you need more liners leave a note on top of your outside food waste bin for the collection staff, a roll of liners will be left for you.
Keep your caddy clean by rinsing with water or wiping with a kitchen towel.
