South Shropshire District Council Presents.....
Sharing Traditional Craft Skills with Transylvania
"Hello, I'm Colin Richards, Conservation Officer for South Shropshire District Council, and for many years we've been working in Romania with the British Council, helping to re-introduce traditional building craft skills to help local people repair their outstanding heritage.
This Autumn, we had the opportunity, through Leonardo funding, to take out to Romania, young building students and building craftsmen from this area, to not only share their skills in Romania, but to learn new skills. Those skills included, building with clay, converting timber using the side axe. To process the material we relied on human effort. After two days, they were driving horses and carts up the street.
We've built a brick and tile kiln as part of the project, and this has enabled local people, to make bricks and tiles to repair the buildings, which are very vulnerable to the aggressive climate in that part of the world.
This project also has a direct relevance to Shropshire, because part of the requirements of the Heritage Lottery Fund, in giving us Grant Aid for the Town Walls, was that we had to undergo projects where we helped to encourage the retention of traditional building craft skills and the promotion of traditional building craft skills amongst young students, and by undertaking this work in Romania, we will be qualified to apply for Heritage Lottery Funding for the Town Walls."
