Environmental Building Conference ? 25/05/2007

An Environmental Building Conference was held as part of the Ludlow Green Festival 2007, aimed at exploring sustainable building practices through the use of local examples.

The speakers lived up to expectation displaying passion and expertise in their specialist fields.

Paul O'Neill of Bryden Wood Associates
talked about embracing sustainability within the design process; - offsite manufacture and assembly, flexible use of space and the importance of minimising energy used during construction as we approach carbon neutral buildings (in use).

Paul Sutton, South Shropshire Housing Association
talked about how SSHA achieve Eco Homes Excellent standard in the construction of affordable homes and why this is important, both globally and locally.

Tom McGhee of Castle Cement
explained how industrially grown hemp can be combined with cement and lime to deliver excellent insulation properties.  Tradical Hemcrete locks up carbon from CO2 and offers the opportunity of better than zero carbon buildings now.

Robert Saunders, Marches Energy Agency
illustrated how the various micro renewable sources of energy can be used to reduce your carbon footprint.

Bob Jones, Environmental Engineer
brought along his model for a 40% house.  The energy efficiency could be achieved though a combination of design, insulation, use of renewables, and grey water recycling.
· Colin Richards, SSDC's Conservation Officer, spoke on achievable and practical options of improving the green credentials of historic buildings.

The day included a visit to the Straw Bale House built by various community groups led by Colin Richards. This example of 'eco-building' demonstrates a tried and tested sustainable building technique, (using low cost local materials), which results in a visually pleasing structure with exceptional insulation properties and requiring limited building skills.

This conference provoked so much interest that all places were quickly filled and there were many disappointed would-be applicants.  All refreshments and services contributing to the day were locally produced and sourced.  Feedback from the conference confirms that the day was very successful.
