Street Naming & Numbering - Property Name Changes
This note is intended to inform anyone wishing to change any part of the address of their property, whether it is their house name or their business/commercial property, that they must seek permission from the Local Authority.
This also applies to the registering of an address for a single new property or properties, which are newly constructed but are not accessed by a new street.
An application, on the requisite form, should be made to South Shropshire District Council. The application should indicate the existing address and also the new name, which you wish to use.
Any name chosen must not be offensive, vulgar or cause confusion with other existing property names in the locality.
Therefore, in choosing a new name, care should be given to the selection. It is essential that the property name should be unique in that locality in order to avoid confusion for postal deliveries and emergency services.
For instance
Rose Cottage should be avoided if there is already a property nearby with a name of Rosemary Cottage, Rose House, Primrose Cottage etc
The process involves consultation with Royal Mail and notification of all relevant organisations including Emergency Services, Land Registry, Valuation Office, Utilities etc. and also the updating of the Local Land and Property Gazetteer.
Application forms should be completed and returned to
The Street Naming Officer,
South Shropshire District Council
Stone House
Corve Street,
Ludlow
Shropshire, SY8 1DG
It should also be noted that with effect from 1St April 2007 a fee of £117.50 (£100 plus VAT) will apply to this service.
The fee should be submitted with the application.
The application should be made a minimum of 30 days before the property name change is required in order that consultation and any necessary negotiation can be carried out.
