Planning policies - environmental issues - agenda 21

Local Agenda 21 is a programme of action which aims to improve quality of life for present and future generations.

What?
The term Local Agenda 21 refers to the need to plan for and achieve sustainable development in the Twenty First Century.

Where?
The Agenda 21 Treaty was signed by over 150 world leaders at the Earth Summit in Rio in 1992.

Why?
The Treaty, one of several important outcomes of the Conference, was a response to growing concern about our degrading environment and escalating poverty.

When?
The term Agenda 21 was coined in 1992.
Nearly every local authority has a Local Agenda 21 Strategy or similar policy framework as requested by the Government.  South Shropshire's Commitment to Sustainability is expressed in its newly adopted Sustainable Development Framework and Carbon Reduction Programme.

Who?
Whilst national and local government involvement in Agenda 21 is essential, everyone in the community has a role to play, from schools to businesses, from church congregations to farmers and from neighbourhood groups to non governmental organisations.

In South Shropshire officers and councillors are working to support and encourage Sustainable Development in the community as well as within the Council and in addition to signing up to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change we have formed an Innovative partnership with the Marches Energy Agency to help us to make real changes to how we operate our business and deliver services.  Close links also exist with both the Shropshire County Council and Community organisations such as Ludlow 21 and the Wasteless Society based in Bishops Castle.

How?
Agenda 21 can take many forms and for us this has found formal expression in our Sustainability Framework.

South Shropshire District Council approved it's Sustainability Framework and Carbon Reduction Programme in September 2006.

A Reminder...Sustainable Development is...
'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs'.

...its aim is to achieve a better quality of life for all. It achieves social and economic progress, whilst protecting and enhancing the environment.
