Private Sector Renewal and Assistance
Private Sector Renewal and Assistance
The primary objective in respect of the enforcement of housing standards is to
"secure for the benefit of persons living within the District, homes that are fit for human habitation and suited to the needs of the inhabitants".
The main activities are in connection with the private rented sector, in respect of disrepair, unfitness and harassment of tenants. This can be as a result of complaint, referral, or proactive survey.
In addition, the standard of fire precautions, means of escape and provision of amenities are enforced in houses in multiple occupation. There is now considerable emphasis on bringing vacant property back into use for housing purposes in relation to which grant assistance is available.
A range of assistance is available from the council for housing purposes and is detailed in Part III of the Housing Renewal Strategy.
