Gypsy and traveller sites

Shropshire County Council is responsible for the management of four sites for travellers around the county at:

  • Craven Arms - South shropshire
  • Cross Houses - Shrewsbury
  • Oswestry
  • Prees - North shropshire

Between them these 'mini villages' can accommodate 46 families.

Gypsy Liaison Service
The County's Gypsy Liaison Service is responsible for the day-to-day management of the sites, including rent collection and charges for electricity. But their role goes further than this and involves a great deal of liaison with other organisations, including:

  • Medical services
  • District and borough councils
  • West Mercia Constabulary
  • Community Services
  • Department for Work and Pensions (formerly Department for Social Security)
  • The general public and media
  • On behalf of travellers' children, the service deals frequently with the West Midlands Education Service for Travelling Children.

Gypsy/Traveller Site Provision in South Shropshire District
The search for land suitable for possible development to meet accommodation needs of gypsies and travellers in South Shropshire.

Three distinct processes must run their course before a gypsy/traveller site can be developed in South Shropshire, with full public consultation opportunities at every stage. At any stage, new evidence could be introduced to the process and influence the decision(s). A site will only be developed if there is demand for additional capacity.

The Council undertook the following processes

  • Enquiries in Public  - (Held in public, written and oral evidence taken)
  • Policy Panel deliberations and recommendation - (Held in public, additional written evidence considered)
  • Policy Committee deliberation (and recommendation(s)) - (Held in public, public can speak at start of meeting)
