Regeneration Best Value Review
Regeneration is a Corporate Priority for South Shropshire District Council. It is a cross cutting service area, with an influence and contribution to make to the three other Corporate Priorities of Affordable Housing, Recycling and Leisure. The activities undertaken through regeneration projects and programmes are closely linked to all the Council's identified priorities and the Community Strategy.
Effective Regeneration is essential to raising and maintaining people's quality of life. Regeneration covers both economic and community development activity, both of which are vital for sustainable rural communities.
The Regeneration and Partnerships Team is part of the Corporate and Support Services Department. The team consists of skilled and experienced Officers, on both permanent and temporary contracts. The size of the team fluctuates, depending on the number and scale of regeneration programmes and activity that the Council is managing and delivering.
A key role for the team is to maximise the level of external funding, secured for the district of South Shropshire, for regeneration and community purposes. Regeneration included economic development, tourism, community development, learning and skills, transport, and community safety. There are also clear links to planning, housing, health, leisure, culture and education. Regeneration is essential in raising the quality of life for the people who live and work in South Shropshire. In order to be most effective, the Regeneration and Partnerships Team is actively involved in numerous partnershps, at local, District, County, sub regional and regional levels.
The team is involved in project development, both on behalf of the Council, and also by supporting other groups and organisations active in the area. The team endeavours to secure funding for the various initiatives from a variety of sources, including the Regional Development Agency (Advantage West Midlands), European sources, National Lottery, DEFRA, and the Countryside Agency.
In terms of project management and delivery, the team is directly responsible for many initiatives. Equally the team plays a supportive role to other Council departments and District partners delivering regeneration activity. Claiming, monitoring, and evaluation are all critical activities that the Regeneration Team must undertake, during project delivery and beyond, for several years after the funding has ceased.
The Regeneration Best Value Review was undertaken in 2004.
