Drinking Water Quality
The Council has a duty to remain informed about the wholesomeness of all drinking water supplies within its area.
Private Water Supplies
A private water supply is any supply that is not provided by a water company. The source may be a well, borehole, spring or stream etc, and may serve one or more properties. It is normally the owners and/or users of the supply who are responsible for its upkeep and maintenance.
The Council, as required by the Private Water Supplies Regulations, samples private water supplies. This is to ensure that those supplies serving more than one property comply with the Water Quality Regulations to protect public health. The Council charges for sampling in accordance with this legislation.
Public Water Supplies
The Council liaises with Severn Trent Water Company and the Drinking Water Inspectorate in relation to mains water supplies. The mains supply is divided into a number of zones and each year the Council routinely takes one sample from each zone for reassurance analysis. Problems with mains water supply should in the first instance be reported to the water company or may be reported to the Drinking Water Inspectorate, telephone 020 7944 5956. The Council may also assist Severn Trent Water customers who are dissatisfied with the quality of the mains water supplied.
