What Do Officers Do?
The Council employs staff to support and advise its Councillors and help them to make well informed decisions. They are also employed to implement the Council's policies and put into practice decisions taken at meetings. Officers are also responsible for ensuring that services run smoothly, efficiently and effectively.
The Council's Officers will do all they can to help and support you in your work as a Councillor. Guidance will come mainly from the Chief Executive and the Directors and Heads of Services, particularly the Head of Administration and Legal Services, who is also the Council's Monitoring Officer. They are available to help and advise irrespective of whether you are part of a particular political group, Chairman of one of the Policy Panels, or Committees, or simply acting in your capacity as ward Councillor.
It is not only the most senior Officers who will provide you with support and advice. Other Officers will always do their best to explain how things are done and why.
Although the Council does not employ staff to provide a dedicated Members' Support Team, the Administration and Legal Services Section does provide a word processing, photocopying and information gathering/problem solving service on request. Members can also request Council stationery to enable them to undertake their ward work.
The Council is encouraging all Members to use electronic communication and to this end Councillors are provided with a computer and appropriate training. As far as possible, day-to-day communication with Members, including circulating papers for meetings, will, in future, be by e-mail and each Member will be given an e-mail address.
