Is It All Voluntary?
Councillors do not get a salary for the work they do. It is regarded as voluntary public service. However, Councillors are paid allowances which are designed to reimburse them for the costs they incur while engaged on Council business.
- Every Councillor is entitled to a basic allowance. This is currently £2,473 a year and is paid directly into a bank account in monthly instalments.
- Some Councillors are also entitled to claim a special responsibility allowance to cover any special responsibilities they are asked to undertake on behalf of the Council, such as Chairmen or Leader and Lead Members.
- There is also a child care and dependants' carers' allowance payable on production of receipts, up to an agreed maximum cost per hour.
- Travel allowance is payable for attendance at approved Council Meetings both at and away from Stone House, but this does not apply to other work within your ward.
- If you are away from home for a certain number of hours on Council business, other than for ward work, then you are also entitled to claim a subsistence allowance.
