About Home Visits and Verification Framework
Since 1st July 2002 the Council's Benefit Section have been using working practices introduced by the Government to make sure that customers receive the correct amount of benefit. These procedures are called the Verification Framework and are intended to help in the prevention of fraud and error.
The framework sets out the information that the Council must collect and check before benefit is paid. It also sets out the evidence that the Council needs and the checks that must be made in support of a claim for benefit.
Evidence
- Proof of Income, Capital, Rent, Tenancy, Identity, National Insurance Number etc. is required to support a claim
- The Verification Framework specifies that photocopies are not acceptable and original documents must be submitted.
- Original documents are copied for the records and are returned.
- Sufficient and specific evidence is requested in order to satisfy the requirements of the Framework.
Home Visits
- Under the Verification Framework, every customer will be visited at least once, at home, during the lifetime of his or her claim under a routine programme.
- The visit is to verify residency and to ensure that the claim details are accurate so that the correct benefit is paid.
- The Visiting Officer will also use this opportunity to assist the customer in considering whether he or she may be entitled to any other benefits. Information regarding other Council services can be provided if requested.
- Welfare visits are also undertaken by request for those customers with difficulties accessing the Council Offices.
