Street care and cleansing

Aims of the Service

To ensure, as Principal Litter Authority, that land in the open air, to which the public has free access is, so far as is practicable, kept clear of litter and refuse.

The Council undertakes to keep highways and public land under its direct control clean in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Code of Practice on Litter and Refuse (As Amended).

To ensure that requests for service relating to cleanliness of streets, public open spaces, problems with dog fouling and incidents of fly-tipping are responded to promptly.

Litter and dog waste bins are provided where appropriate and emptied regularly.

Where education and awareness-raising fails to prevent anti-social littering and fly-tipping, enforcement action is undertaken by officers of the Streetscene Team, in collaboration with the Council's legal and administration service and, where appropriate, with  the Environment Agency.
