About South Shropshire

Image of UK showing the location of South Shropshire

South Shropshire is one of the most sparsely populated and rural districts in the country, with only 40,000 residents in an area of over a quarter of a million acres.  Only the towns of Ludlow, Church Stretton and Cleobury Mortimer have populations in excess of 3,000 people.

South Shropshire covers an area of nearly 400 square miles, which includes some of the most beautiful areas of countryside anywhere in England.  Two thirds of the District is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and half the District is within Environmentally Sensitive Areas. There are also sites of Special Scientific Interest, Conservation Areas and 313 Wildlife Sites in the District.

District Map (AONB)

Around 80% of the district is in the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  This, and the number of buildings of architectural and historic interest, make the area extremely popular with tourists.

South Shropshire's economy is largely dependent on industries such as agriculture, which was hit hard by the foot and mouth outbreak, but still remains an important and integral part of the employment sector.

Although tourism in South Shropshire was affected by foot and mouth, over a quarter of the District's workforce are employed in the leisure and tourism industry, and although wages are generally low in the area, unemployment rates in South Shropshire are below the national average.
