Pollution control - Air Quality Management

Air Quality Management
The Council has a duty to review and assess seven air pollutants against health based objectives set by governments expert advisors and European Directives.

The pollutants which have been examined are:

  • benzene
  • 1,3- butadiene
  • carbon monoxide
  • lead
  • nitrogen dioxide
  • PM10 (fine particles)
  • sulphur dioxide

Where objectives are unlikely to be met the Council has to declare an Air Quality Management Area with the aim of reducing air pollution.

In Shropshire, all the District Councils and Telford and Wrekin Council have worked in partnership for many years to carry out the reviews and assessments and have produced joint reports. In South Shropshire the reviews and assessments to date have not revealed any areas where the air quality objectives are likely to be exceeded. However the Council is having to carry out a detailed study (known as a Detailed Assessment) during 2006 and 2007 in Ludlow and Craven Arms for two pollutants, nitrogen dioxide and benzene.

The following studies have been carried out since the year 2000

  • Air Quality Review and Assessment 2000
  • Air Quality Updating and Screening Assessment 2003
  • Air Quality Detailed Assessment March 2005
  • Air Quality Progress Report April 2005
  • Air Quality Updating and Screening Assessment 2006

Air Pollution Monitoring
There are no real-time permanent air quality monitoring stations in South Shropshire. Temporary, state-of-the-art monitoring stations have been used in specific investigations, in particular the Detailed Assessment of 2005. Such monitoring stations are expensive to purchase and run and are largely beyond the resouces of the Council. Simple air pollution monitoring is however ongoing at a number of sites in the district.

The nearest real-time air pollution monitoring stations are at Aston Hill near Bishops Castle and in Leominster. These stations form part of the UK national urban and rural network run by the Government, and the results from them are reasonably representative of large areas of the district.

The results from these air pollution monitoring stations are available at the following link
