Street Naming & Numbering - Developers and Builders

Developers and Builders - New Sites

If you are constructing a new development that requires the creation of a new street or road, then you should advise the authority at an early stage. As part of your request to commence the process of street naming and numbering you should advise building control of your preferred suggestions for naming the street and give reasons for your suggestion.

Names of living people will not be put forward to committee for consideration.

Upon receipt of a notification to commence proceedings the relevant parish/town council will be requested to comment on the suggested names put forward by the developer. The council will also be invited to put alternative names forward for consideration. Upon receipt of all the suggested names building control will then consult with the Royal Mail.

When building control is satisfied that the names and supporting reasons are suitable then a report will be presented to the Development Control committee for a decision to be made. In the event of Council rejecting the names put forward then the process will be repeated until a satisfactory outcome is reached. It is important to bear in mind the impact of the committee cycle upon the timing of street name allocations.

Once a name is agreed building control will then contact the Address Development section of the Royal Mail to request the allocation of post codes for the individual properties on the development. This request will be accompanied by a site plan indicating the individual plot numbers/names. The developer and other interested parties will be notified once the post codes have been allocated.

Developers and Builders - Existing Sites

If you are developing an existing site or infill development, which will have the same road/street name within it's address then you will not need to go through the committee process as referred to above, however, you are required to advise building control and request the allocation of appropriate street numbers/property names. Once this has been done the Address Development section of the Royal Mail will be notified advising them of the new numbering. Royal Mail will then allocate postcodes for the development.

If you have any queries regarding street naming and numbering, then you can contact building control on the telephone number or e-mail address at the top of the page.
